The list of most expensive cities in Africa tries to show or reflect the cost of living in Africa in today's world. According to Mercer and ECA international survey of most expensive cities in the world for expat workers, emerging economies are heavily featured in the list compared to developed economies. This trend is caused by the impact of foreign direct investment which has caused the emerging economies to adjust. According to Mercer's president, he attributed this to a volatile market and stunted economic growth in the world. In Africa to be precise, many factors have contributed to the rising cost of living for expat workers. They include monetary value, consumer confidence, investment interest rates, exchange rate of country's currency and housing cost.
