BUSIEST AIRPORT IN AFRICA

    
  The airports international Council recently released its list of busiest airport in the world. The ACI as it's fondly called, releases the list of busiest airport in the world every year. The agency's definition of busiest airport is the amount of passengers enplaned plus passengers deplaned plus direct and transit passengers. The agency compiled it's list using passenger traffic data from 1,144 airports around the world.
 The focus of this article is on the busiest airport in Africa. The ACI data obtained by Stanstats showed that African countries have experienced year over year growth in passenger air traffic and we're well above historical figures. The data also showed that the top ten busiest airport in Africa accounted for more than 100 million passenger traffic in Africa and that air travels increased by more than 10 percent in Africa. Here is the top ten busiest airport in Africa.
  1. O.R TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: The south African airport formerly known as the Jan shuts international has the title for the busiest airport in Africa. Over 28 million passengers patronized the airport last year. The airport also offers non stop flight to every continent. 
  2. CAIRO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: The Egyptian airport is the second busiest airport in Africa with over 14.7 million passengers patronizing the airport annually. It is also among the busiest airport in the middle Eastern region. 
  3. CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: The South African airport is the third busiest airport in Africa and the second busiest airport in South Africa. Over 8.5 million passengers patronized the airport last year. The airport received the award of best airport by skytrax in 2011.
  4. MOHAMMED V. INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: The Moroccan airport was named after the great king Mohammed V. of Morocco. It handled more than 8 million passengers last year. It is the second busiest airport in North Africa. 
  5. HURGHADA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: It is the second busiest airport in Egypt with 7.1 million passengers patronizing the airport last year. It has become a popular destination for leisure flights. 
  6. SHARM EL SHEIK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: The Egyptian airport was formerly known as the Ophira International Airport. It once served as an Israeli airforce base before Israel's withdrawal from the Sinai peninsular. 6.6 million passengers patronized the airport last year. 
  7. ADDIS ABABA BOLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: The airport is the busiest airport in Ethiopia for both local and international flights in the country. It is also the main  hub of the Ethiopian airways. Recent statistics showed that 6.5 million passengers patronized the airport.                                       
  8. JOMO KENYATTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: The airport was named after Kenya's first president and prime minister. It is also one of the busiest airport in East Africa with scheduled flight destination to over 50 countries. It served 6.3 million passengers last year. 
  9. HOUARI BOUMEDIENE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: The Algerian airport is also known as Algiers international airport. It is the busiest airport in Algeria and the fourth busiest in North Africa. 5.4 million passengers went through the airport last year. 
  10. KING SHAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: The South African airport is last on our list with 4.7 million passengers. It replaced the now defunct Durban International Airport.
