RATE OF MATERNAL MORTALITY IN AFRICA

                

What is maternal mortality and maternal mortality rate? 
    Maternal mortality can be described as death during pregnancy or child birth. The WHO defines it as the death of a woman during pregnancy, child birth or 42 days of termination of pregnancy irrespective of the duration and the site of the pregnancy while maternal mortality rate is the annual number of female deaths per 100,000 live births.
What is the rate in the world? 
  According to WHO report, the high number maternal deaths highlights the gap between the rich and the poor, the developed and developing countries. In fact, almost all maternal deaths occurs in Africa. Although the report showed that maternal mortality rate has decreased in the world generally, 880 women die every year due to child birth annually.
 What is the rate in Africa and how is determined? 
   Moreover, the report showed that 99 percent of maternal mortality occurs in developing countries and more than half these deaths takes place in subsaharan Africa and is about 239 per 100,000 live births. The criteria that is used to determine maternal mortality rate is by dividing number of maternal death by 100,000 live births. Method for collecting data include house hold surveys, census, verbal autopsies.
Who are mostly affected in Africa? 
  Pregnant women are generally affected but younger adolescent girls are mostly affected in Africa. Statistics shows that, it is the leading cause of death among young adolescent girls in Africa.
 What are the leading causes in Africa? 
 Maternal mortality is as a result of complications during pregnancy and child birth. Some of the complications include: severe bleeding, unsafe abortions, infection and others are caused by diseases like cardiovascular diseases, malaria and HIV/AIDS.
Which countries are mostly affected in Africa? 
 The most affected countries include:

  1. SIERRA LEONE :The country has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world. 1,360 pregnant women out of a 100,000 died in Sierra Leone in 2015. The  Ebola outbreak which killed more than 14,000 people increased the rate of maternal mortality. 
  2. CAR:The country has the second highest rate of maternal mortality in Africa. 882 women out of 100,000 died during pregnancy or child birth in the country. 
  3. CHAD:The rate of maternal mortality in the country stood at 856 deaths per 100,000 live births. 
  4. NIGERIA: maternal mortality rate in the country stood at 814 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2015. The rate is even higher in the northern part of the country. 
  5. SOUTH SUDAN: 789 females out of 100,000 died in the country. The rate is Still very high but has diminished significantly from 2013.
