AFRICAN COUNTRIES WITH THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF LITERACY AND ILLITERACY
Education has become a barometer to measure the level of development in our modern society. The importance of education has grown rapidly in the Last century in Africa. It has become a standard to measure the development of the modern African society. In Africa, every citizen of a particular country believes that the country the live in offers the best opportunity for education or feels that their might still be room for improvement.
In terms of literacy level in Africa, some countries are way ahead of others. The question now is, what does it mean for a country to be literate? Well, literacy can be defined as the ability of a sizeable population in a country to be able to read and write. Which African countries has the highest level of literacy? The UNESCO Institute of statistics on behalf of UNESCO releases estimate of literacy level for countries all over the world. The estimate is based on people aged 15 or over who can read and write. The data collection involves using surveys. The report showed that illiteracy is generally higher in Africa and Asia.
The survey calculated the overall literacy level for a particular country, the literacy level for both male and female and also the gender difference for each country. Only 49 African countries were included in the survey, although UNESCO did not publish the report for Djibouti and Somalia even though the were included in the survey.
The report showed that equatorial Guinea has the highest level of overall literacy in Africa with 95.3 percent of the population able to read and write and is followed by South Africa and Libya with 94.3 percent and 91.0 percent respectively. For literacy level among male alone, Equatorial Guinea still has the highest level of literacy among men with 97.4 percent and is closely followed by Libya with 96.7 percent and South Africa with 95.5 percent.
The report also showed that literacy level among women in Africa is generally lower compared to Men. South Africa has the highest level of literacy among women in Africa with 93.1 percent of the women able to read and write and is closely followed by Equatorial Guinea and Botswana with literacy levels of 93.0 percent and 88.0 percent.
However, on the other end of the line, Niger has the highest level of illiteracy in Africa. Only 19.1 percent of the general population can read and write. Illiteracy among male alone stands at 27.3 percent and 11 percent among women.
