COUNTRIES THAT OFFER THE HIGHEST MINIMUM WAGE IN AFRICA

 
The concept of minimum wage is a reoccurring theme for social scholars in the world. It has become a tool to measure prosperity and happiness in the world. It can be defined as the minimum compensation for employees set by the state. The idea of minimum wage is to make sure that workers are properly compensated for their work.
  In Africa however, minimum wage have been growing steadily as more African countries move from a lower income economy to a middle income economy.
 Calculation for minimum wage can be complicated because of the way it is interpreted in different countries. For example, some countries have no mandated minimum wage for workers but may deem it necessary to introduce minimum wage for employees in a particular sector of the economy like in the case of Zimbabwe that has no minimum wage except for mine workers.
 They method for calculating minimum wage is salary or allowance gotten before the deduction of taxes, levies or welfare payment. Annual leave, sick pay, including allowances for public holidays are not included. Analysis of minimum wage in Africa shows that francophone countries offers better minimum wage in Africa because some of them still use French model of minimum wage.
Here is a list of countries that offers the highest minimum wage in Africa.


  1. LIBYA, $325 PER MONTH:The oil rich North African country  offers the highest minimum wage for any country in Africa. Constant oil supply and a very strong currency has kept the economy going despite the tensions in the country. Government subsidizes rent and utilities in the country. 
  2. MOROCCO, $310 PER MONTH: The country offers the second highest minimum wage in Africa. The last adjustment of the minimum wage was in July 2014 and it has increased the minimum wage by more than 10 percent. 
  3. GABON, PER MONTH $255: The country has one of the best labour laws in Africa and also offers the highest minimum wage in sub saharan Africa. Minimum wage is more than $8 a week in the country. 
  4. EQUATORIAL GUINEA PER MONTH $225: Since oil was discovered in the country, the government has made concerted effort to increase minimum wage. The country has the highest Gross national income per capita in Africa. 
  5. TUNISIA $220 & $190 PER MONTH: The country offers the fifth highest minimum wage in Africa. Minimum wage for workers in the public sector is $220 while for private sector workers is $190.
  6. ALGERIA, $175 PER MONTH: The oil rich country offers $175 a month for both public and private sector workers. They county's minimum wage structure is loosely based on the French model. 
  7. REPUBLIC OF CONGO, $170 PER MONTH: The country offers the third highest minimum wage in sub saharan Africa and it can be attributed to the government's new labour policies. 
  8. SOUTH AFRICA, $155 PER MONTH: The country strongly recommends a minimum wage of $155 a month for private sector workers. 
  9. CHAD $120 PER MONTH: The country has one of the best labour laws in West Africa and offers one of the best minimum wage structure in West Africa. 
  10. LIBERIA $114 PER MONTH: The country offers 15 Liberian dollars an hour for employees which roughly translates to $0.31 per hour.
